EARLY DETECTION FOR OVARIAN CANCER

DO YOU HAVE ANY OF THE RISK FACTORS???

1)  The exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown, but women with certain risk factors may be more likely to develop the disease.  While the presence of one or more risk factors may increase a woman's risk, it does not necessarily mean that she will develop ovarian cancer.**

2)  Identified risk factors are:**

AGE:  The risk of ovarian cancer increases with age and occurs most often in women over the age of 50, with the highest risk in women over 60.

FAMILY HISTORY:  Women who have one or more first-degree relatives (mother, daughter, sister) or a second-degree relative (grandmother, aunt, cousin) who has had ovarian cancer are at greater risk of developing the disease.

INHERITED GENETIC MUTATIONS:  A mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene may increase the risk for ovarian cancer.  Women of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage are particularly susceptible to BRCA gene mutations.

PERSONAL HISTORY:  Women who have had breast or colon cancer are more likely to develop the disease.

CHILDBEARING:  Women who have never had children are at higher risk.  The more children a woman has, the less likely she is to develop ovarian cancer.

3)  You may also be at increased risk if you have never been pregnant or are infertile.

4)  Other suspected risk factors include prolonged use of high estrogen without progesterone; exposure to talc or asbestos; high fat diet; and increasing age.
